Now that my current contract is winding down, I’m taking the upcoming 2-week “comfort zone” to update my portfolio, accept a few freelance gigs, add the latest experience and measureables to the resume, and knock out my target of…hmm…how many contractor applications do I want to make within the next 7 days? My absolute record was 75 applications in 3 days, 100 in 5 days - which turned up 2 solid offers at the end of August. I will likely aim to equal those totals.
It may sound daunting or worse, but in an episode of PBS’s “Need to Know” it was said that in an economy of this nature, it’s basically the ratio that one can expect - if that much. The key to landing gigs and contracts seems to be to get as specialized as possible, and to quickly show how past experience would be an asset to the company - no matter how short the contract or how simple the job might be.
Two months later, with 2 additional projects completed w/additional skillset, I can apply for more types of contracts. 2012 looks even more promising as I add a few more abilities to my skill set…”All hail continuing ed!”
